Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos had some strong words for employees who are worried about future changes to the culture at the company saying what is happening is deliberate and inevitable as he spoke during The Wall Street Journal’s Tech Live Conference. “They say there was a dark time, but we are always focusing on developing the culture,” Sarandos said. ‘Culture is shifting’ when anyone says that. Yes, of course it needs to.”
The discussion comes after Netflix earlier this year made changes to its culture deck in June after consulting its 1,500 employees. This has recently shifted from the previous ‘Free and Responsible’ culture to the latest framework known as ‘People over the Process’ basically because one is able to attract responsible people and encourage them to work out their ideas in an open environment. “When we read, ‘We wanted to reflect how we work, not dictate how we work,’ Sarandos made that observation,” was another comment made.
Sarandos also comments that the original culture note written down by Hastings, when Netflix was still a company with less than 300 employees, is perfect for the initial Netflix conditions. Now, as nexflix is the largest streaming service with employees 14000, it becomes important to address new trends in organizational behavior.
The changes are made to manage freedom with responsibility, so that to maintain a creative and effective atmosphere at Netflix. Sarandos’s comments reaffirm the work that the company does to try and sustain a good culture while navigating its changes as it becomes a streamer in a tough market.
